Following the clues that are hidden within the letter, Claudia discovers a dollhouse with a miniature grandfather clock that is the key to solving a mystery that has haunted her family for years.

Review

When I was approached about reviewing this book, I was pretty excited to review it after reading the description. At first glance, I thought The Spell of Pencliff might resemble Harry Potter ; however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Claudia is a typical thirteen-year-old girl who is living a normal life with her parents until her life is turned upside down by the mysterious letter.

I appreciated how Hobbs waited until near the end of the story to reveal Claudia's magical ability, and I thought that Claudia's ability was unique and interesting. I enjoyed the world that Hobbs created; it was detailed, imaginative, and charming.

I found Claudia to be a very likeable character; Hobbs did a wonderful job of portraying her as a well-adjusted, bright, and inquisitive young teenager. Even though The Spell of Pencliff features a female protagonist, I admired the fact that Hobbs created a story that is gender neutral and appropriate for family story time.

Finally, I thought that the story ended on a good note. The ending gives readers some closure, but it also leaves readers wanting to know more about Claudia. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next book in the Claudia Quash Series .
